AUTHORITY

Let’s be reminded of the situation that Paul is dealing with in the Corinthian church. There were some who had risen up in the church, and others who had come from outside, who claimed a greater authority than Paul. Paul understands from God that he has the responsibility of apostolic leadership for these churches, and he sees clearly that these others are intruders, even deceivers, being used by Satan to mislead the church. But how do you convince someone of your own authority? It would be hard to do this without looking like you are big-noting yourself. In these chapters Paul expresses both his disapproval of self-commendation but is also forced to assert his apostleship over and against these intruders. It is a hard situation, and you will sense, as you read chapters 10-12, Paul’s displeasure in having to say what he says in his letter. But he does this because this situation threatened his ability to shepherd this very needy and vulnerable church. God blesses us through other people. If, however, we are unable to respect and honour those people, we will miss out on this blessing. If we allow ourselves to become jealous and cynical of those in positions of spiritual authority, we forfeit what God wants to give us through them. This is one of the first temptations Satan will use to separate us out from the flock in order to devour us. Be wary of his schemes.

Ask God to make you more aware of the Devil’s schemes.
